Third Generation Mobil Phones

Twenty years ago, the first generation of mobile phones was introduced based on analog technology and supporting only voice services.

Ten years ago, second generation - digital - mobile phone technology was born and spurned an unprecedented decade of 50% plus growth in mobile phone shipments.  In 2000, 415M mobile phones were shipped worldwide, making them the highest volume complex electronic system in the history of the electronics industry.

This year marks the commercial rollout of third generation (3G) mobile technology.  European network operators alone have spent well over 100Bn on the rights to offer 3G phone services in Europe - as much as $700 per prospective customer in some markets. 

The centerpiece of this teardown analysis is the first 3G mobile phone.....the Panasonic P2101V.
